Time... [Updated]

Trickles...
_______surreptitiously, away....
Flies...
_______remorselessly, by...
Runs...
_______rapidly, out...

Like water --
Precious, but we have no qualms wasting.
Like air --
Invisible, yet we choke when it disappears.
Is money --
Its value depends entirely on how we use it.

We try to measure it, rationally
by the swiftness of sands as they slip
through the rabbit hole inside a glass;
or by listening to the strikes
of a gong against a bell;
or by observing the shadows
of the sun beneath a dial.

When in fact we count it
by the cups of coffee we've had
as in vain we're kept waiting
yet again;
and then by how quickly
our hearts beat
when we finally meet
our love;
and last
though by no means least,
by the sound of deadlines whooshing past
way above our silly,
procrastinating
heads.

The above poetry exercise is really too clunky compared to the beautiful poetic gems below. Enjoy :)

Kung Hei Fat Choy, Snowdrops. May I wish you good health and prosperity in the Year of the Tiger.

Thanks for your encouraging message left on my AS blog. (I've made it a habit not to respond to comments there, so as not to excite the 50-cent gang too much :)) As much as I want to help promote understanding in the East/West dialogue, I have discovered that it may be too big a task for someone as insignificant as me. Having said that, I'll keep doing my small part for as long as my time schedule permits, while trying not to let the absurdities of reality (the 50-cent gang being one of them) get to me.

Dear Alice and Myblahblahblah,

Thank you so much for your really warm greetings and I'm very very sorry for being missing-in-action in the last while. As my little poem suggested I was completely in over my heads with deadlines so I had to stay off blogs for a while to attend to those. I've managed to partially clear the decks so can finally come up for air again.

Am going to reply to you individually now.

Dear Alice

Thank you so much for your kind wishes and your lovely message :)

I agree that promoting East-West understanding is really too huge a task for any one individual to tackle, but I'm really grateful for your untiring efforts in showcasing progressive Chinese voices in the blogosphere through your translations. Although it may be just one blog, but your blog helps to amplify those voices which would otherwise have remained unheard.

So you're being too modest Alice, as your persistence means that these alternative viewpoints are not drowned out by propaganda of the 50-cent gang, and for that we all owe you a huge debt. As you know, ocassionally as a commenter I can't help myself responding to their trolling remarks, so I really take my hat off to you for being able to remain calm and not rising to their bait! I hope you will continue your resolve to blog in spite of your busy schedule, and I'm really glad to have met you in the blogosphere :) Your blog inspires me to blog about politics too and I do hope to get back more properly into political blogging this year.

Take care and god bless, and I hope the Year of the Tiger will bring much joy, prosperity and health to you, too :)

Hi Myblahblahblah,

Happy belated CNY to you also! Hope you had a good holiday, and congratulations, it seems you have indeed found your own place? What an exciting way to start the chinese new year :D

Thank you so much for your kind message, I'm really flattered that you trust in my taste. I've a few websites that I can immediately suggest to you:

Apartment Therapy http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/main/home-tours
The one-stop-shop resource for all kinds of interiors, from tours of all kinds of apartments and houses in various major cities to furniture sourcing, interiors design queries, various home hacks, and its sister sites like Re-Nest, Kitchn, etc. which focuses on specific subjects like sustainable living. I promise you, once you start reading, you won't be able to stop.

design*sponge
http://www.designspongeonline.com/
My favourite of all interior design blogs. It may not be as big as Apartment Therapy (AT could be quite unwieldy), but I love love love its various specialist series, like "Living in...", which overviews the decor elements of a particular film (e.g. http://www.designspongeonline.com/2010/02/living-in-the-red-shoes.html), or their Past and Present series, which details the history of some of the key interiors pieces and trends (e.g. http://www.designspongeonline.com/2009/09/french-chairs-diy-project.html). You will learn a lot and be inspired by all the beautiful photography on it.

Brocante Home Pinboard
http://brocantehome.tumblr.com/
For sheer eye candy however, you cannot beat this Tumblr site, posted by the vintage chic queen-bee behind the Brocante Home blog (http://brocante-home.blogspot.com/). All the photos posted there are so eye-wateringly gorgeous and inspiring, I frequently wish that I have a whole new house to do up just so that I can recreate some of the beautiful looks on it.

Actually, you know what, you've inspired me to write a proper post about this :D Give me a couple of days and I'd come back to you with some tips from my own experience in a proper blog-post. Though I'm sure you'd have plenty to read about and be inspired from the above sites in the mean time :)
